X-ray videography of ultrashort pulse laser material processing at the DESY

High-speed X-ray diagnostics reveal new insights into laser materials processing with ultrashort pulses.

In late May 2022, researchers from the Universities of Stuttgart, Erlangen and Aachen as well as the Fraunhofer ILT and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon succeeded for the first time in recording a percussion drilling process in stainless steel with high temporal resolution. More than 100 experiments were carried out at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg. Hereby, a stainless-steel sample was transilluminated using the synchrotron X-ray beam and simultaneously percussion drilled with an ultrashort pulsed laser from Light Conversion. The images provide interesting insights into the formation of the microhole and the interaction between the laser radiation and the material.
