A mode-locked thin-disk laser oscillator with the promising laser crystal Yb:SSO was demonstrated for the first time at the IFSW. At an average output power of 28 W the oscillator generated pulses with a duration of 300 fs at a repetition rate of 27 MHz. These first resutls show that after the currently pursued improvements of the crystal growth Yb:SSO has high potential for the generation of sub-ps pulses in thin-disk lasers with high average powers.
