The society of the former doctoral candidates of the IFSW (VEDIS) has awarded this year’s price for the best master thesis to Mr. Christoph Röcker.
In his thesis Mr. Röcker developed a numerical model for the spatially and temporally resolved simulation of the propagations of ultrashort laser pulses in nonlinear media. The simulations point out the strong interrelation between beam quality, phase mismatch, and pulse peak power. Due to the possibility to define arbitrary input fields, the connection between beam profiles, conversion efficiency and beam quality could be investigated.
By coupling the optical simulation with a thermal simulation, which takes into account linear absorption of laser radiation in the nonlinear medium, modelling of the interplay of temperature distributions and the nonlinear process became possible. The simulations allow to deepen the understanding of the processes in nonlinear crystals, making it possible to plan and execute future experiments more effectively.
