Worldwide Fastest X-Ray Video of a Laser Welding Process

On 10th November 2010 a new x-ray video facility was put into operation at the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) of the University of Stuttgart. With this equipment it is possible to visualize laser processes in real time with x-ray video technology for the first time in Europe. X-ray video sequences with a frame rate beyond 1000 fps were recorded for the first time on 23rd November 2010.....

How small is the proton?

International team of researchers observes unexpectedly small proton radius in a precision laser experiment with exotic hydrogen atoms.

The proton – one of the universal building-blocks of all matter – is even smaller than had previously been assumed (Nature, 8 July 2010). This is the result obtained at the PaulScherrer-Institut (PSI) in Villigen (Switzerland) by an international research team, including scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) in Garching and the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFWS) of the Universität Stuttgart (both from Germany). .....

Laser Institute of America awards Prof. Hügel

Laser Institute of America (LIA) has chosen Professor Dr. Helmut Hügel, longtime Director of the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW), University of Stuttgart, for the 23nd Arthur L. Schawlow Award. The award, which so far received for the most part American researchers and only two European Scientists, will be presented during the International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics on October 6 in San Francisco.
The Schawlow Award announced since 1982 recognizes individuals who have made distinguished contributions to applications of lasers in science, industry or education. The prize is named after Professor Arthur L. Schawlow, who received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1981 for his contribution to the development of laser spectroscopy.
