Surface functionalization of stainless steel by laser material processing

As part of the EU-project TresClean (www.tresclean.eu), the IFSW is working on laser-structured self-cleaning and antibacterial surfaces. Within first experiments, rolled non-treated stainless steel AISI 304 was laser structured in such a way that the surface has a contact angle of 160° and is thus superhydrophobic. The measurements of the contact angle took place at the University of Parma. A beam source having a wavelength of 1064 nm, a repetition rate of 300 kHz and an average laser power of up to 12 W was used. An area of 1 cm² was patterned in 45 seconds. The SEM image shows a section of the structured surface.
